Stree 2 Movie Review: Ghostly Laughs Return

Stree 2: Ghostly Laughs Return, the sequel to 2018’s scary comedy hit Stree, is now streaming. Flick directed by Amar Kaushik and produced by Dinesh Vijan, thus, this instalment is expected to focus and continue from where the first part left off while offering new frights and humour.

Plot Overview

Stree 2 picks up from where the story of the small town of Chanderi left, where the vengeful spirit of Stree was feared by all men who venture out alone at night. Screaming no more, the original movie was intense horror with the laughter which was intact with Stree 2. This time, however, the stakes are higher, and there is even less information about Stree, or touse the local jargon ‘Stree.’

Without revealing much about the plot, it is good to note that the movie also explores Stree’s background and more to her persona. The sequel also has new characters who add their own traits and make sure that the comedic aspect in the story will not be miss.

Performance and Direction

Back to the cast, and it is not a secret that in this film Rajkummar Rao, Shraddha Kapoor, and Pankaj Tripathi with the rest of the ensemble cast, act with even more passion. The movie has all the elements of Rajkummar Rao’s comic timing as well his ability to give us the creeps when portraying a character that is fearing for his life. Shraddha Kapoor impresses as the mysterious woman and raises a lot of eyebrows regarding her character’s real motives. Pankaj Tripathi, with his perfect timing comedies, remains the essence of the film while giving burst of laughter between all the serious moments.

The director Amar Kaushik explicitly seemed to carry forward the originality while at the same time, adding small elements that would ensure that the audiences do not feel bored. The fast forward of the movie is sequential, possessing good dosage of tension and much-needed humor to avoid tremendous suspense build up.

Technical Aspects

On the section of Stree 2, a special mention has to go cinematographer Amalendu Chaudhary. The mise-en-scene of the movie is spooky with feelings of aesthetics to a ‘T’ giving a horrific small town feel of Chanderi. Another factor which must be mentioned is that the film effectively uses silence in combination with sharp, loud noises.

The script that has been written by Raj Nidimoru and Krishna D. K. is full and meaningful with lot of comedy which makes the movie good till the end. The dialogues of horror movies as well as of the characters during their attempts at trying to fend off the zombies are humorous, parodying the horror genre itself and these elicits cheers among the audiences that watched the first episode of the franchise.

Conclusion

In their totality, Stree 2: Ghostly Laughs Return doesn’t disappoint; it manages to be quite enjoyable as a follow-up to the first one. Although it tries to capture the essence of the Stree it is still able to bring in new facets of the plot. The movie is a horror-comedy film, which has good acting, good direction, and a good storyline and had me hooked till the end.
